Joshua Lefcowitz, CPA/ABV/CFF, CVA, CFE, ASA

            Joshua Lefcowitz is a Senior Manager with Alpern Rosenthal, one of the largest Certified Public Accounting and business consulting firms in Western Pennsylvania. He has more than nine years of experience in public accounting and has performed appraisal services in three (3) principal disciplines:

Business Appraisal and Enterprise Valuations

Intangible Asset and Intellectual Property Valuations

Litigation Support

            As a Business Appraiser, Mr. Lefcowitz is qualified to perform these services by virtue of his training, experience and technical skills in the areas of business and intangible asset appraisal and accounting.  He has managed and participated in engagements to estimate the value of various types of publicly and privately owned operating companies, limited partnerships, investment holding companies, cooperatives, proprietorships and other entities.  He has performed valuations of businesses in various industries including, but not limited to:

The purposes of these valuation engagements have included litigation matters, sales and purchases of both fractional interests and the entire equity of businesses, goodwill impairment testing in accordance with SFAS No. 142, “Goodwill and Other Intangible Assets,” strategic planning, gift and estate taxes, buy-sell agreements and succession planning, stock option plans in accordance with SFAS No. 123-R, “Share Based Payment” and IRC Section 409A , built-in-gain calculations and charitable contributions.

            Mr. Lefcowitz also has extensive experience in the valuation of Intangible Assets and Intellectual Property.  He has worked on and managed engagements to appraise:

The purposes of these intangible asset and intellectual property valuation engagements have included litigation matters and purchase price allocations in accordance with SFAS No. 141, “Business Combinations,” impairment testing in accordance with SFAS No. 142, and strategic planning.

            In the Litigation Support area, Mr. Lefcowitz has worked on and managed engagements related to valuations prepared for equitable distribution, minority shareholder suits, and bankruptcy proceedings, as well as complicated evaluations of economic damages and disposable income analyses. 

Professional Qualifications

            Mr. Lefcowitz earned his Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certificate in 2007.  He has been awarded the Accredited in Business Valuation (ABV) and Certified in Financial Forensics (CFF) designations by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.  He has also achieved the designation of Certified Valuation Analyst (CVA) by the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts, the Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) designation by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, and the Accredited Senior Appraiser (ASA) by the American Society of Appraisers.

Education and Training

            Mr. Lefcowitz received his Bachelor of Science degree in 2000 from Clarion University of Pennsylvania where he graduated with Cum Laude honors.  He has continued to develop his expertise in the area of business valuation by attending continuing professional education programs on a regular basis.  Since 2002, Mr. Lefcowitz has completed over 400 hours of continuing education in business valuation and litigation support theory and practice.

Professional Affiliations

            Mr. Lefcowitz is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts, the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners and the American Society of Appraisers.  Mr. Lefcowitz is a past member of the Board of Directors for the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners.  Mr. Lefcowitz currently serves as a member of the steering group for the Leading Edge Alliance’s Young Professionals Special Interest Group.
